Reality Shows in India: Not so Original

Watching television in India is  a part time job of all the housewives and children. People are so into watching television that they take out time from their schedule to watch their favorite sitcom. Wether its a  cricket match or Sas-Bahu conflicts, people enjoy everything that is being telecasted on tv. One of the genre is “Reality Show”. So people who like watching reality shows rather than documentary shows might not know that they rare inspired from west. Here is a list of Indian Reality Shows that are inspired from west and was/is running successfully.

1. Kaun Banega Crorepati
The beloved anchor, Amithabh Bacchan’s show is an inspired show from the UK’s original production “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” created in 1998 by David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, and Steven Knight. It is a multiple answered quiz show. It offers a large chuck of money when is correctly answered.


2. Bigg Boss
The colors channel’s popular game show is a desi version of the original Netherlands based reality show named, “Big Brother” and it was first aired in 1999. Hosted by the one and only Salman Khan, controversial tv stars & personalities are the participants in the show which are kept in a house for 3 months and being monitored continuously (24*7) during their stay.


3. Indian Idol
The reality singing show is a true copy of the successful American show “American Idol”. The American Idol was first premiered June 2002 which took the American tv by storm. It has completed its 14 seasons. Other singing reality shows inspired are
a. The Voice India –  Based on the original “The Voice of Holland” (aired in 2010). The series employs a panel  of four coaches who critique the artists’ performances and guide their teams of selected artists through the  remainder of the season.
b. The X Factor India – Originated from “The X Factor UK”, aired in September 2004, this show picks the young talented youths and train them in singing.


4. India’s Got Talent
Another colors’s production in an adapted show from the original America’s Got Talent franchise on NBC network started in 2006. It is a talent show where one can feature any talent he/she has. There are 3 judges on the panel who decide that who all will qualify to the next round. After the end of 4 rounds, the winner is declared.


5. Comedy Nights With Kapil
The most beloved & awaited show which comes every weekend is having serious resemblance with the 2 times Emmy Award winning UK based show “The Kumars at No.42”. Premiered in 2001, the show is still running successfully, but Kapil had to leave his show & started another “The Kapil Sharma Show”, which is telecasted on Sony Entertainment Channel.


6. Khatron Ke Khiladi – Fear Factor
The series was first launched as Fear Factor India on Sony in 2006, but the channel discontinued the series after one season. The rights were given to Colors TV and the series was relaunched as Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi in 2008 hosted by Akashay Kumar. Originally from America aired in 2001, it is a task based show, where people have to perform daredevil tasks in order to save them from elimination.


7. Jhalak Dikhlaja
The dance based reality show have tv celebrities dancing along with a choreographer. It is inspired from the British’s famous dancing show “Dancing With The Stars” aired in 2005 and is currently running its 22nd season with all glitz and glamor.


8. MasterChef India
Based on the British reality cooking show, the common stayhome mothers & passionate food lovers participate in this cooking competition. The winner is treated with loads of money & honor (in some cases, a chef position in a 5 STAR HOTEL). The master-chef UK initially premiered in 1990, it has completed its 31 seasons.


9. Splitsvilla
This MTV bold reality dating show is based on the American dating show “Flavor of Love” aired in 2006. In Splitsvilla, young guys & girls are trying to secure a place in the villa by competing in various tasks & trying to find true love. Based on the tasks they perform, the contestants try to win the title.


Some other failed attempts to imitate successful tv shows:

10. Dus ka Dum
Hosted by Salman Khan, the concept is copied from the US game show ‘Power of 10’, where contestants predicted how a cross-section of local people of the country responded to various polls. Each correct prediction will win an amount to the contestant.

11. Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao
The survival concept based Sony tv production show, is a copy of the famous British TV show ” I Am a Celebrity–Get Me Out Of Here”. This show was one of a kind on Indian television but was not good enough for another season.

12. Sach Ka Saamna
The drama themed show Sach Ka Saamna has become the must watch once when it was aired. The reality show was based on un-wrapping the truth which was clearly copied from a Canadian serial drama,  “The Moment of Truth” television series which aired on CBC Television from 1964 to 1965 for the first time.

13. Kamzor Kadi Kaun
Kamzor Kadi Kaun, the Indian version of a successful American game show, “The Weakest Link”, didn’t get much attention, maybe because of the rude hostess Neena Gupta.

14. Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?
Hosted by Shah  Rukh Khan, it is inspired from the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th grader”, which is an American
television game show format, based on posing grade-school level questions to adults, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy. Unfortunately the Indian version didn’t go well like the original one.

15. Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout
This show was a epic failed attempt to copy the original super hit & loved American game show “Wipeout” aired in 2008. The reality show consists of series of barriers which the contestants must clear to move on to the next round. If a contestant fails to complete an obstacle he/she is said to be wiped out.
